Koko Bakery

After the show, we stopped in at Koko Bakery in Asia Town for dinner.   I've been there plenty of times, but I hadn't blogged about their food before.   They have bubble tea, Asian-style baked goods, rice bowls, and other good things to eat.   Two years ago we got our Christmas Cake from there.

That was a cream cake with strawberries and kiwi inside.   Not overly sweet, just perfect.

Today we got a couple of egg tarts (far left and right), a curry beef bun (bottom left), a bacon cheese bun (bottom right), and a chocolate mousse (image at top of page).  Yummy!

This is my almond bubble tea.

And this is Steve's mango smoothie.

The portions are the right size.  It's a great place to stop in for a meal or a snack.  Even better for taking home dessert!

The Book of Mormon

I just got back from seeing The Book of Mormon and it was absolutely amazing!  Loved it loved it loved it!   It's the most popular musical in the world today!   Tickets on average are retailing at $475 dollars, and that's not even considering the scalpers outside of Broadway!

This is the opening number as performed by the cast at the 2012 Tony Awards:

The musical is by Trey Parker and Matt Stone (yes, the South Park guys) in collaboration with Robert Lopez (who was one of the masterminds behind Avenue Q, another one of my favorite musicals).  If you have watched any other musical works by Parker and Stone, you would be aware that those guys can really craft an earworm.  The duo can quickly crank out songs that will be stuck in your head for days at a time.

The musical is about a pair of young Mormons who are set off on their mission work at age 19, and are sent to Uganda.  The humor comes from the sheer incongruity of the situations the guys get into.  The music is really fun and catchy.   If you can get tickets, I really recommend seeing this show.

Noodlecat and DeliverMeFood.com

I had been wanting  a bowl of ramen since early this morning.   Specifically, I wanted to try one of the ramens from Noodlecat, but I didn't feel like driving downtown, paying for parking, and waiting at the restaurant.  Enter DeliverMeFood.com.   I went to their website, selected what I wanted from the restaurant, picked a time for delivery, and my food arrived right on time.   It was convenient, and not too pricey considering all I got.

I ordered the Mazemen Ramen, with parmesan, rice, dashi, garlic, tempura egg & spinach.   It arrived with the noodles and spinach in one container and my tempura egg and crispy bits in a smaller container.

Please note that this ramen doesn't have broth in the description.   I liked it.  Cheesy noodle goodness with a yummy tempura egg.  The inside was medium,  so not entirely runny.

I also decided to order the Japanese Chopped Salad.  It has iceberg lettuce, choi, tofu ranch dressing, a soy braised egg, bacon, avocado, smoked tofu, and crispy ramen noodles.  I really liked the soy braised egg.  It was very savory.

I'm having leftovers for lunch tomorrow!  I'm going to call this two meals.

The Pitman Painters

Today we saw the Pitman Painters at the Beck Center.  Excellent play.  It's the true story about the Ashington Group, a group of coal miners in the United Kingdom starting in 1934.   They get together in an art appreciation class and eventually become famous for producing paintings themselves.   The play addresses the themes of classes, what is the nature of art, and what is an artist.   It was really fascinating to see this group of working class miners grow into something more than their profession in life.  I recommend this play to anyone who loves history, art, and/or art history.  It's funny, and yet also touching.  You can see some real character growth, both in the dialogue and in how each of the miners' art progresses.
