Phantom of the Opera

Yesterday, we saw the new production of the Phantom of the Opera.  It is a new production and quite different from the version I had seen back in high school.   Key differences:  Carlotta is true opera diva rather than a caricature.  I can imagine her in many of the operas I have seen.   The phantom wants Christine in his show because he obsessed with her, not because of level of talent.  

Costuming is gorgeous.  The opera within the play, Hannibal, looks like something I would really see at the Metropolitan Opera.  I'd totally watch that.

This show isn't as dark or macabre as its predecessor.   There is an increased focus on the backstage areas.   It feels more real to me.   Did you know that there really is a lake under the Paris Opera house?  

They do a really good job with the phantom's face at the end of the show.

 Christine has a lovely voice, but she just doesn't have the power/style that Carlotta has.   I liked this production, but the eighties synth in the score hasn't aged well. Still, quite enjoyable.

Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella

Steve and I just got back from seeing Cinderella at Playhouse Square.   I was really expecting to dislike it.  I don't have a very good history with Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.  Steve and I actually met because of mutual rejection of a famous production.   This new production is absolutely delightful!  It takes the classic music from the 1960s production and combines it with a new book that gives the work a wonderful depth.

I grew up watching the original television musical.  The new book makes it extremely accessible and endows it with snarky wit.  There is an addition of a new character and a subplot.   It really reflects today's cultural paradigm.

The quick costume changes truly seem magical.  There are three of them to look out for.   I recommend binoculars if you are seated in the balcony.  I could easily watch this show again.

Pippin

We went to see Pippin today.   Now that was a spectacle.  Classic Broadway magic.  Searching for a purposeful life filled with the magic of a dark circus telling the tale.   Steve did this one back in high school, so he already knew the plot.   It was amazing!

The lead player was originally played by Ben Vereen.  In this revival, it was originated by Patina Miller.  Both of them won Tony Awards.

It's a wonderful spectacle of a show filled with extraordinary acrobatics.  It's sensual and sexy and definitely worth seeing.
