Forever Plaid

Just got back from seeing Forever Plaid at the Beck Center.   It was a musical revue with songs from the 40s through the 50s.   The plot: a little known singing group, the Plaids, get killed in a car accident on the way to their first gig.  Now they get to perform the show that they never had the chance to in life.

It was nice enough.  Excellent four part harmonies.   Warning!  There is audience participation!  I guess I would have felt more strongly about it if I had been able to remember the Ed Sullivan Show.  It's a tame little show that you can safely bring an older relative to see.   I'm sure if you enjoy variety shows like the Lawrence Welk Show, you will enjoy this.   It's not my type of musical, but there is a valid audience for it out there.

Young Frankenstein

We saw Young Frankenstein at the Beck Center on Friday with some friends from out of town.   That was truly fun!   Absolutely hilarious!  It's an adaptation/elaboration of the 1974 film featuring Gene Wilder and directed by Mel Brooks.

It's definitely a show for teens and above.   There's a lot of subtle and not-so-subtle innuendo, as well as excellent comedic timing and slapstick.   Two numbers that stick out in my mind are Putting on the Ritz and Roll in the Hay.  The Beck Center did a great job on this one!   Go see it!

Birthday Cupcakes for Steve

Steve and I went to Main Street Cupcakes to get his free birthday cupcake!  These cupcakes are truly creative and flavor packed.  The store has the largest flavor selection that I've ever seen, over 230 different varieties.   We find something new to try each time that we go.

This one is Hazelnut.

The pink one is Bubble Gum.   The girl at the store described it as fruit punch flavored cake and frosting.

This one is Mimosa.  I've never tried this one before.

Steve picked out the Watermelon cupcake for his free birthday cupcake.

To round our our selection, we selected Chocolate Strawberries and Champagne.  We've had the Strawberries and Champagne and the Berries and Champagne, but this is the first time we're trying this flavor.  We needed something with chocolate.

Cherry Valley Lodge

This past weekend, we had brunch at the Cherry Valley Lodge.  I had the buttermilk pancakes and had bananas and pecans added in.  You could choose from 5 different toppings to be added for fifty cents each.  It was quite yummy.
Steve had the had the signature cherry bread french toast.   It contained three different types of cherries and was battered in Kahlua.  It was good.

A Stop in for Jeni's Ice Cream

We stopped by a Jeni's to relax away from the summer heat.   In my dish are brown butter almond brittle, bramble berry crisp, and the buckeye state.

I'm really happy that the store has expanded so much.  I remember when they only had one ice cream stand in the North Market in Columbus.   Now they have branches outside of the city and pints are available at Whole Foods and Heinen's.

Seminar

We just got back from seeing Seminar at the Beck Center.  That was powerful.   The show is billed as a comedy, but I think it's more of a drama.   It's played without an intermission.   4 writers in the making at private writing seminar with a thoroughly unpleasant teacher, who was once a big name in the business.   I laughed some, but mostly I felt angry.   I really just wanted to really deck the teacher for being so abusive, offensive, and mean.

Lessons gleaned from this show:
  • It is often about who you know.
  • You have to go beyond your comfort zone.
  • Sleeping with the teacher can get you places. (Yuck.)
It's an abusive show, but ultimately constructive with a happy ending.
